Illuminate, Define, and Excel: What do these words REALLY mean?

In the quest for better health and wellness, and even more so in our journey toward a happy, successful life and career, we often stumble upon a trio of powerful words: illuminate, define, and excel. Each one represents a fundamental stage in the journey toward personal transformation and better living. But what do they truly signify in the context of health & wellness and life coaching? Let’s shine a light on these terms—because, after all, who doesn’t enjoy a good metaphorical lamp?

Among other things, Illumination means to light up, to make clear, and to shed light on previously hidden truths. In the realm of health & wellness, this can be broken down into two significant components: awareness and understanding.

Awareness is the first step in your journey. It’s about recognizing where you are currently and what habits might be holding you back. Think of it as turning on a flashlight in a dark room; you begin to see the clutter (and perhaps that dust bunnies haven’t been fed in a while).

Understanding takes it a step further. It involves processing that awareness and understanding the ‘why’ behind certain behaviors. In all forms of coaching, a good coach will help you examine thought patterns, emotional responses, and physical behaviors that may be keeping you from being your healthiest self, both physically and in other aspects of your life. The goal? To help you see that you’re not just a couch potato; you’re a couch potato with dreams of running a marathon (in your mind, at least), or to help you deal with challenges in your life in a way that doesn’t involve screaming yourself hoarse (although occasionally, that can be good too).

Once you’ve illuminated the areas in your life that need some work, the next step is to define your goals and vision. Defining is less about running in circles and more about drawing a clear path forward. What do you want to achieve? Is it losing weight, gaining strength, or perhaps developing a healthier relationship with food?

In life coaching, defining your goals can include setting SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) targets. Think of it as giving your mind a GPS, complete with a route to your wellness destination and a backup plan for when you inevitably miss that first turn (because let’s be real, who hasn’t taken a wrong turn on the way to their dreams?).

Now that you’ve illuminated your path and defined your goals, it’s time to excel. This stage is about taking action and striving for excellence in the goals that you’ve set for yourself! It’s one thing to set goals, but what’s the point if you don’t roll up your sleeves and get to work? Coaching can play a vital role here, providing accountability and support as you navigate your journey. Whether it’s keeping you motivated through tough days or celebrating your small victories a good coach will be there every step of the way.

Finally, health and wellness and life coaching isn’t just about motivation; it should involve a good laugh, too. In the end, it’s all about progress, not perfection. So step into your journey with a smile, a few giggles, and the confidence that you can thrive. You’ve got this!
